Episode 17: “The Black Angel” Star Wars Short Film
Back in 1980, George Lucas commissioned a short film to show before ‘Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back.’ Written and Directed by Roger Christian, “The Black Angel” would only be shown in about 400 theatres, strewn across the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, and Australia. In Christian’s directorial debut, we see his strength as a set designer and art director shine through(working on ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Alien’). He emphasizes that the audience should set their clocks back 34 years, as it was a different time when the short was made. Should we give him the benefit of the doubt and consider the film as nothing more than a product of it’s time? Or should we compare it to the feature film it preceded? The film is said to have influenced ‘Excaliber,’ other medieval films of the time, and even ‘Empire’ itself, so we should consider giving the film more credit than the director himself is.
Let us know what you thought of the short, and if you think these type of companion pieces should be done more often in our modern age of filmmaking. Also, should we start a petition to get the snake helmet part of official Star Wars cannon?
