Episode 25: “@Social #Connection”
Do you know someone that spends more time communicating via social media, text, and instant messaging than face-to-face interactions or even phone calls? If you said yes, this episode is for you. We are looking at the short film titled ‘@Social #Connection’ from Eric Bair this week. The short film depicts with how an overly connected couple deals with connecting in the real world after a power outage.
While it does well to show how relationships in our internet-of-things world function, it feels drawn out to the point where pacing becomes an issue. And everyone knows how much we enjoy pacing problems.
With that said the filmmakers do take on a larger challenge of not using any verbal dialogue, but rather, using texts on screen in combination with a split-screen effect to help tell the story. It’s mostly effective, and I have to applaud them for the effort, as there are quite a few creative uses in the short. In line with this topic, we discuss a video from the YouTube channel Every Frame a Painting, which tackles the very subject of depicting texts on screen.
